Georgia celeberates Shalva Akhaltsikheli Commemoration Day on June 30

Akhaltsikhe, Georgia: St. Shalva Akhaltsikheli Commemoration Day is celebrated in Akhaltsikhe municipality city hall with festive events on Sunday, June 30, 2024. Shalva Akhaltsikheli was a Georgian military commander and courtier of the noble house of Toreli-Akhaltsikheli.

The city’s main holiday, St. Shalva Akhaltsikheli Cathedral, started with a festive mass, which was celebrated by the Metropolitan Bishop Theodore of Akhaltsikh and Tao-Klarjeti and the Archbishop of Rimnik Barsanuf. The clergy congratulated the people gathered in the temple, the residents of Akhaltsikhe, and the whole of Georgia on this day and talked about Shalva Akhalsikhe’s new year.

The ceremonial mass was attended by the Majority Deputy of the Georgian Parliament, Anton Obolashvili, Deputy State Commissioner Shota Rostiashvili, Mayor of Akhaltsikhe Municipality Irakli Lazarashvili, Chairman of the City Council David Lomidze, Deputy David Tabatadze, representatives of the State Romanian Administration and local government, guests and parishioners.

The celebration of ‘Akhaltsikheloba 2024’ promises a diverse range of activities at Akhaltsikhe Castle in the afternoon. From entertaining sports games, an exhibition and sale of works by artists and folklore masters, to activities specifically designed for young people, a concert featuring local artists, and the prestigious awarding of Akhalsikhe Municipality Mayor’s Scholars and honorary Akhaltskhels, there’s something for everyone.

The event dedicated to celebrating the city will end with a gala concert and ceremonial fireworks, followed by a live broadcast of the eighth final match of the European Championship, which will be held at the city’s central park and Akhaltsikha castle. The Georgian national team and Spain will face each other.

Shalva Akhaltsikheli, a key figure in Georgian history, was one of the most notable military commanders during a series of expansionist wars waged by the Kingdom of Georgia under Queen Tamar.
