Tbilisi: The ruling party of Georgia, “Georgian Dream” announced to begin another round of impeachment proceedings against President Salome Zurabishvili for violation of constitution.
The ruling party’s plan in this regard was disclosed recently by the Speaker of Parliament Shalva Papuashvili yesterday.
According to the speaker’s version, GD decided to make this move due to the president’s recent visit to many capitals of European Union nations even when she was not allowed to do so. Georgian Dream will file a complaint against the President in the Constitutional Court.
It is worth noting that the Constitutional Court of Georgia in past have already found that the President violated the Constitution of the country. Speaker further added that despite the constitutional court’s ruling, the opposition parties are supporting her which is a wrong precedent.
The speaker also alleged that due to the support of opposition parties, she is moving to a foreign country. The president’s visit to a foreign country is also a violation of the constitution as she has no right to do so.
While commenting further the Speaker added that “the President, being the holder of the highest position is supposed to respect the constitution of the country. Moreover she is supposed to set an example for other people to respect the constitution of the country.”
The Speaker reiterated that when the President violates the Constitution, the Government can not remain silent . Our government is committed to taking all necessary legal action to prevent the President from further violating the Constitution, ensuring the rule of law is upheld.
We have decided to proceed not to degrade the President but to protect the Constitution, which is the need of the hour. So we have decided to submit another proposal to the constitutional court added Speaker.
As per the speaker and other representatives of Georgian Dream, although the president’s term will come to an end next year, we have taken this decision to show our symbolic intention.
Our party wants to ensure that people read in history the name of the President who was impeached. This will be a lesson for all the new candidates who want to be President of Georgia not to violate the country’s constitution.
