Georgia: The National Environment Agency of Georgia has completed the first phase of monitoring glacial valleys across the country, including observations of glacial lakes, glaciers, and rock processes.

The melting (ablation) dynamics of the glacier language were also evaluated, and the results will be compared with historical data.

It should be noted that next week, experts from the leading Swiss company GEOTEST AG will visit Georgia. They will get to know the situation on glaciers together with the agency’s experts.

Within the scope of the expedition, using modern technologies, the assessment of glacial threats will be carried out throughout the country.

The study will identify the areas at risk and take appropriate preventive measures. Based on information provided by Swiss experts, the situation will be analyzed, and future activities will be planned together with specialists from the National Georgian Environment Agency and independent experts.

Research in glacier valleys aims to minimize the negative consequences of climate change caused by the development of possible natural events.

Expanding the hydrometeorological observation network and installing modern information-telecommunication and forecasting systems are continuing.

Over the past decade, 190 meteorological and hydrological monitoring stations have been installed. By the end of the year, the number of stations will reach 245 units, significantly contributing to the quality of weather forecasting and the effectiveness of early warning of expected natural events.

Meanwhile, with the involvement of the world’s leading Finnish Meteorological Service, implementing a modern information system will assist in providing weather forecasts and warnings about expected natural events with modern technologies.

Also, the agency’s specialists carry out visual and instrumental monitoring of glacier valleys in a field expedition. Within the monitoring framework, aerophotos are collected, and their analysis/processing is carried out through drones. In addition, specialists collect photo materials on glaciers on foot, and the situation is assessed on-site.
