Tbilisi, Georgia: The Georgian national handball team has secured its spot in the European Championship for the second consecutive time. The decisive match took place in Tbilisi during the fifth round, where Georgia defeated Greece 29:26.
Crucial Match Against Greece
Their first encounter, held in Greece. However, Georgia needed only a win in this return match to overtake Greece and secure second place in the group. The top two teams from each group earn qualification for the European Championship.
Strong Finish in Final Minutes
The decisive moments came in the final minutes, when Georgia played with greater precision and determination, ultimately determinig a 29:26 victory.
The President of Georgia, Mikheil Kavelashvili, congratulated the Georgian athletes on this great victory. The President attended the match between the national handball teams of Georgia and Greece at “Tbilisi Arena”. He attended the match together with the Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze and the members of the Cabinet of Ministers.
Mikheil Kavelashvili also posted the glimpses of the match on his official Facebook page on May 8, 2025, Thursday. In a short note posted by him, he appreciated the Georgian Handball Team.Â
After the match, he met the members of the Georgian national handball team and the coach. He saluted the team on the victory on behalf of the Georgian People and also wished them success in their European Championship. “I am sure there will be great victories ahead,” he added.
The members of the Georgian executive and legislative authorities also attended the match. By the decision of the government, the national team of handball players of Georgia will be awarded a million GEL cash prize for qualifying for the European Championship.
