The Georgian Health Ministry stated on Friday, March 11, that nearly 2,200 people have registered for the initiative taken by the Government to donate blood for citizens of Ukraine amid Russia’s military operation against the country.
The health administration had opened registration for blood donors to help the injured people during the ongoing hostilities as part of the Government’s support initiatives.Â
On March 4, the Ministry has also announced its hotline for the purpose. Interested blood donors were asked to call the hotline through the number 1505 or register at donor.moh.gov.ge for offering their support.
The Ministry said it would then contact the registered persons and will ask them to come to their nearest collection point to donate blood for delivery to patients in Ukraine if needed.
On February 28, Georgian Health Minister Zurab Azarashvili said his Ministry had communicated with the relevant agency of Ukraine to provide blood donations to the nation.
Moreover, the Health Minister said the Georgian side still sent a certain mass of erythrocytes (Red blood cells) from existing supplies with a package to Ukraine. “It will assist many Ukrainians if needed,” Azarashvili told reporters.
The Minister also said the Georgian side would consider sending health professionals if Ukraine expressed their need.
All citizens of Ukraine currently residing in Georgia receive free emergency medical services, based on a decree of the Government of Georgia.Â
Furthermore, treatment at Covid clinics, Covid-19 testing and pandemic vaccination are also provided to the citizens of Ukraine. The aid applies to all Ukrainian nationals who arrived in Georgia between February 1-February 23.
Since the outbreak of hostilities in Ukraine last month, the Georgian Government has set aside 1 million GEL ($315,457/€279,842) from its reserve fund to help Ukrainians who have been displaced by Russia’s ongoing invasion. Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili took the decision and signed the decree authorising the aid delivery. The budget will be used to purchase medical supplies for Georgia’s Ministry of Health.
After an initiative taken by the Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili a few days ago to support Ukraine, around 100 tons of humanitarian aid packages have been collected all over Georgia to assist the Ukrainian people.
