Georgia: Riga is hosting the qualifying tournament for the Paris Summer Olympic Games of 2024; the Georgian National basketball team competed for the first time in the Olympic qualification tournament, marking a significant milestone in Georgian history.
In a closely contested match, the national team faced the Philippine team in the second match of the group stage. Despite a Hard-fought victory with a score of 96:94, the Georgian basketball players’ margin of 2 points was insufficient to secure a spot in the semifinals, thereby ending their bid for the Olympic license.
The Georgian team lost the first match with the host Latvia team, scoring 55:83, and the Philippines team beat Latvia 89:80, so the Georgian squad needed to win with the Philippines by 19 points to compete in the semifinals.
The First Deputy Minister of Culture and Sports, Joseph Bagaturia, and the President of the National Basketball Federation, Viktor Sanikidze, attended the match between Georgia and the Philippines.
Georgian national team competed in group A at the tournament. In addition to Latvia, six-team qualifying tournaments are held in Puerto Rico, Spain, and Greece, where each Olympic road will be played.
The Georgian national basketball team won the Olympic qualification tournament and advanced to the second group stage of the debut World Cup.
If the national basketball team secures a Paris Olympics license, it would mark a significant milestone, becoming the first team to defend Georgia’s honor in the Olympic games, a testament to their potential and a source of hope and optimism for the future.
