Georgian Ombudsman discusses children rights with representatives of state

Tbilisi: On January 25, the Public Ombudsman’s Office of Georgia held a working meeting with representatives of state agencies and service providing organizations on the  children rights living and working on the streets.

 The working meeting was held in the format of discussion and was attended by the Chairman of the Human Rights Protection and Civil Integration Committee of the Parliament of Georgia, Chairman of the Standing Parliamentary Council for Protection of Children’s Rights, representatives of government administration, various ministries, state agencies and service providing organizations.

 Speaking at the meeting, the Acting Ombudsman Tamar Gvaramadze spoke about the sacrifices of support services for street children and their families, including violence, exploitation, discrimination, trafficking and other alleged criminal acts.

 In addition, Tamar Gvaramadze has recently highlighted positive aspects, such as: drafting the 2023-2026 strategy of protection of children living and working on the street; opening of a daycare center for them in Batumi; implementation of a 24-hour emergency response mechanism in the State Care Agency and expressed hope that the meeting will help the relevant services on the street Living and working in it In effective protection of children’s rights and overcoming problems.

 The participants of the meeting talked about the legal status of children rights living and working on the streets and highlighted the activities carried out before this stage, the challenges currently in practice, including the unresolved problems identified in service delivery. 

In addition, attention was put on the need for child safety, child-oriented and systematic approach, strengthening coordination and possible implementation of additional services.

 The working meeting was held with the support of the USAID-PDO Partnership Program between the Georgian Public Ombudsman and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). “
