The speaker of the Georgian Parliament, Shalva Papuashvili, reaffirmed the Government’s support for Ukraine amid Russia’s invasion in a letter to the Chair of the Verkhovna Rada, Ruslan Stefanchuk on Saturday.

Papuashvili conveyed his disappointment to his counterpart that Georgia’s solidarity with Ukraine has recently been “overshadowed” by “political speculation” and “utter disinformation campaigns.”

Moreover, “The slander about Georgia’s alleged swerving from the path of Ukraine assistance is simply not true,” he said, noting that Georgia had been the victim of full-scale Russian military invasion in 2008, with consequences lasting for decades.

Georgia’s efforts to help Ukraine on an international level, particularly at the United Nations General Assembly, the International Criminal Court, and the Council of Europe, where the country criticized Russia’s invasion, were also noted by the Parliament Speaker.

Papuashvili wrote, “Georgia and Ukraine are indeed closely linked with strategic partnership now, and with historic friendship for centuries.”

Russia started its military operation in Ukraine on February 24 after President Putin announced the recognition of the independence of the Ukrainian territories of Donetsk and Luhansk on February 21.

Due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, many companies worldwide have taken steps to put financial pressure on the country and its people.

The Government of Georgia also provided 100 tons of humanitarian aid packages to Ukraine, adding the country has also provided aid worth 1 million GEL ($315,000/€279,000) to Ukraine, with the Georgian Post also informing it would deliver humanitarian parcels to Ukrainian citizens free of cost.

After anxious days and nights, thousands of people are making their way back home from war-torn Ukraine to remain safe.

The international community has also condemned the invasion, expressing support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
