On August 19, Georgia’s Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said that the opposition party the United National Movement must be sued. He told the UNM is responsible for the 2008 war with Russia.
It is to be added that the Georgian Prime Minister’s comments were a reaction to the UNM’s anti-government statements. During his comments the PM firmly blamed the United Nations Movement for the 2008 escalation. He said UNM is responsible for a number of crimes in the context of the 2008 war with Russia.
He was responding to the topic as the ruling regime announced the start of a “public legal process” for alleged “treason” on behalf of the former UNM Government during the war with the Federation of Russia which happened in 2008.
As per the Prime Minister of Georgia the UNM since 2005 was secretly preparing the groundwork for the crimes of the August war. Moreover this conflict and escalation caused by the UNM resulted in a 20 percent loss of territory of Georgia to Russia and people are still suffering from the atrocities in Russian Occupied Russia.
At the same time the PM underlined that it was very unfortunate to see that the opposition of the United National Movement Government had adopted a law that underlined the peaceful settlement of the conflict. Moreover due to this strategy it has created a “temporary administration” of the Tskhinvali. The Tskhinavi region was the center of conflict and UNM “chose the President for the region.”
According to the Prime Minister the “military-type confrontations” and “other types of provocations” have not helped the country in any way. However this caused the escalation of the war.” This was the biggest crime which was committed by the United National Movement against the country and people.”
Interestingly the 2008 war was fought after Russia invaded Georgia. Russia was supported in this war by the other two countries South Ossetia and Abkhazia. This war was won by Russia. The Republic of Georgia lost 20 percent of its land to Russia.
