As online crime often called cybercrime has increased significantly across all countries, Georgian enforcement agencies are encouraging people to protect themselves. The Special Investigation Services (SIS) has warned the public to use social media with caution to protect themselves against cybercrime, especially sextortion.
The SIS Georgia has taken to their official social media handles to apprise them of sextortion. The Agency on its official Facebook page stated “The number of cases on the Internet where children and adults are threatened and blackmailed to send intimate photos and videos has increased, this crime is known as sexual harassment (sextortion). Learn more about this crime, be safe and protect children .”
The official Facebook page of SIS also has a link that will redirect the user to SIS’s site. Here user can learn about the measures and other safety tips in detail. Although cybercrime is difficult to eradicate with increased awareness the rate of such crime can be reduced to the lowest level.
As per the cyber security experts of SIS they have been receiving many reports which are related to sextortion. Moreover, the tragic aspect is children are victims of sextortion. In most cases, the accused person contacts the victim through social media sites. The accused after winning the trust of the victim sometimes forced to send intimate images.
Innocent children are the number of victims who get trapped by these cyber criminals. Once they received the secret material related to the personal life of the victim they began to blackmail the victim.
There are many cases where the victim paid a huge amount to the accused for not disclosing personal images with others. However some dare to report the matter to law enforcement agencies. The SIS official once again said that it is everyone’s collective responsibility to stand against cybercrime, especially sextortion. The official further warned social media users not to share their personal details with anyone.
They also said in case of such a threat online public should report the matter to law enforcers. The Georgian laws are very strict with regard to cybercrime.
