The German Ambassador to Georgia, Hubert Knirsch, said in the wake of Russia’s ongoing military invasion of Ukraine on Friday that the Government of Georgia acts with “necessary caution,” while the nation “clearly” stands against aggression in international organisations.
Knirsch stated Georgia could relate to the present situation in Ukraine because it, too, had been a victim of Russian aggression before.
Moreover, the German ambassador told the sources, “We see that the governments of all countries have to make hard decisions in this situation. The Georgian Government, in my opinion, acts distinctly and with necessary caution. The country stands very clearly against aggression in international organisations and co-sponsored the UN resolution with its Western partners.”
Besides this, Knirsch went on to say that the German side was collaborating with the Georgian Government to overcome the economic and security challenges arising from the conflict.
Furthermore, Georgia co-sponsored the UN Security Council resolution condemning Russia’s military operation against Ukraine, which started on February 24 after Russia’s President Putin said on February 21 that the Ukrainian regions of Donetsk and Luhansk had declared independence.
Meanwhile, the international community has denounced the international community by expressing support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.
The Georgian foreign ministry declared on Saturday that Georgia and 80 other countries have co-sponsored the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolution vetoed by Russia, reiterating support for Ukraine “at all possible international forums.”
Russia rejected the UNSC resolution condemning its invasion of Ukraine on Friday. In response to this, US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas Greenfield stated Russia could reject the resolution but could not “veto the truth.”
