In Germany, the health authorities have reported about 320,000 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday, March 24, its highest-ever daily increase since the pandemic began.

In the last 24 hours, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the country’s disease control agency, has confirmed 318,387 new COVID-19 cases and 300 related deaths.

The significant factors driving an increase in cases are the easing of anti-coronavirus restrictions last month and the spread of the highly contagious omicron sub-variant BA.2.

Moreover, staff shortages have been reported in hospitals throughout the country this week as a result of a spike in sickness among health professionals who have been exposed to the virus.

According to the German Hospital Federation (DKG), almost 75% of hospitals were unable to sustain their normal level of operations (DKG).

According to the official data, 2,301 people with COVID-19 symptoms were admitted to hospitals on Wednesday.

Furthermore, the DIVI association for emergency medicine stated that there were 2,335 seriously ill coronavirus patients in ICUs all over the country, while 895 of them were on ventilators.
