Georgia: 51 young people have completed the green camp ‘Climate Ambassadors’ of the Environmental Information and Education Center of the Ministry of Environment and Agriculture.
The Environmental Information and Education Centre of the Ministry of Environment Protection and Agriculture has organized this climate ambassador program. The main objective of the camp program was to give young people an opportunity to learn about environmental issues.
These young ‘Climate Ambassadors’ are now equipped with the knowledge and skills to continue the fight against climate change in their respective regions.
The Deputy Director of the Environmental Information and Education Center, Ekaterine Bendeliani, and UN Development Program Manager (UNDP) Climate Program, Tornike Fulariani, handed certificates to the camp participants.
A competition was held to select the candidates; 51 young people representing different regions of Georgia were selected to participate in the Green Camp in 2024.
The young people, selected through a competitive process, represented the diverse regions of Georgia, including the program’s target municipalities for ‘Reducing the risk of disasters caused by climate change in Georgia’.
Participants of Green Camp, alongside field specialists, gained practical skills in topics related to biodiversity, sustainable management of forest resources, hydrological and geological hazards, disaster risk reduction, hazard assessment and risk assessment. They also received valuable information about the activities of the Department of Geology and Hydrometeorology, and discussed the observation systems used to forecast weather and warn early.
The Environmental Information and Education Center of the Ministry of Environment and Agriculture held the green camp’ Climate Ambassadors’ within the framework of the wide-scale initiative ‘Reduction of Disasters Caused by Climate Change in Georgia’.
This initiative, which serves to protect the Georgian population from disasters caused by climate change, is being implemented with the strong support of the Climate Green Fund (GCF), Georgia, Sweden, and Switzerland.
