In the Guria region of Georgia an urgent meeting was held with the winegrowers. They discussed many issues including the recognition of the status of wine under “Guri Chakhaveri”.
Levan Ujmajuridze who is the director of the Scientific Research Center of Agriculture along with Giorgi Urushadze the state trustee in the Guria region and Zurab Vacharadze the deputy chairman of the National Wine Agency were also present during this meeting with winegrowers and wine producers of Ozurgeti, Chokhatauri, Lanchkhuti municipalities.
Levan Ujmajuridze Director of the Scientific Research Center of Agriculture stated “Today great attention is paid to the restoration and cultivation of local grape varieties in the Guria region. Chkhaveri is one of the outstanding ancient grape varieties of wine in the areas in which it is being grown significantly in the Guria region.
The meeting held in the region was devoted to the discussion of the problems in the field. First of all the issue of creating a qualified grapevine nursery in the Guria region which will guarantee access to quality planting material of various varieties of wines for those who want to plant new vineyards”.
It is to be specifically mentioned that the participants of the meeting also focused the discussion on the challenges in the field of viticulture and winemaking. The importance of conducting theoretical and practical training to increase the knowledge of farmers and the state programs supporting winegrowers and winemakers was also discussed on the occasion.
Notably the meeting held in the region is a continuation of the great previous work related to the revival of the unique grape variety Jishchkhaveri for Guruli and for granting the status of origin to the wine produced from it. Along with the discussion of these and other issues the discussion at the meeting also touched on increasing the availability of laboratory facilities for wine producers of the Guria region arranging free viticulture and winemaking training courses for farmers and interested persons which is important for increasing awareness, added Giorgi Urushadze.
The meeting was held at the “Anaseuli” center for the integrated protection of soil, food, and plants named after Adam Beridze and was attended by the mayors of Ozurgeti, Chokhatauri, Lanchkhuti and the chairmen of the Sakrebulo and other persons who got acquainted with the work processes and scientific projects in the laboratories of the Anaseuli base.
At the end of the meeting a tasting of wines made from the grape variety “Chkhaveri” grown in the villages of the municipalities of the Guria region was held.
