Italy will assume full responsibility for security at the 2026 Winter Olympic Games, with authorities outlining a comprehensive security framework to ensure complete control throughout the event.
The Georgian National Olympic Committee (GNOC)Â shared the announcement on its official Facebook Page on February 1, 2026, Sunday. The GNOC shared the details about the event along with the announcement.
The post shared by GNOC stated, “The Italian government exclusively provides security for the 2026 Winter Olympic Games.” Along with this, it was also mentioned that the hosts of the 2026 Winter Olympics detailed the security structure and stressed that they will provide complete control.
The XXV Winter Olympic Games, which will open on February 6, are recognized as one of the largest security operations for Italy. The hosts will have to take care of security at the same time in the main competition centers – Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, as well as in other arenas of northern Italy.
About 3500 athletes will take part in the games, and the number of fans and guests will reach two million, including 60 thousand people who will attend the opening ceremony at the “San Siro” stadium.
According to Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, the security strategy includes the deployment of a wide range of forces, intelligence-based preventive measures, and 24-hour cybersecurity control. About 6 thousand law enforcement officers, airspace, or flying zones will be closed.
According to the Italian Ministry of Internal Affairs, security on the Italian territory is, as always, exclusively directed by the Italian authorities, and only they will be responsible.
This explanation was led by a statement from the US Immigration and Customs Service (ICE), according to which ICE would take care of the security of the US delegation to Italy.
Italy’s Interior Ministry explains that ICE employees will only work in US diplomatic buildings, including the Milan Consulate, and will not enforce order on site”.
