Tbilisi: To address the challenges of femicides and other gender-related crimes, a joint working meeting of prosecutors and judges was held. The meeting was held with the aim to discuss the  response mechanism to cases of femicide.
The joint working meeting was organized by the General Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia and held with the support of the United Nations Women’s Organization (UN Women). The participants also discussed the possibilities of establishing a uniform practice on crimes of femicide. Representatives of the Office of the Public Defender were   present at this meeting.
During this exceptional meeting  the attendees   discussed the ongoing trends and challenges in combating crimes of femicide. These challenges   include implementing gender-sensitive justice in cases of the mentioned category. Moreover, the practical aspects of the investigation, criminal prosecution, and consideration of cases in court were  also found specially  mentioned during the meeting.
It is worth mentioning that the working meeting also discussed the trends revealed by the Public Defenders. The trends revealed by the office of the Georgian public defender involve the results of the monitoring of criminal cases carried out by the Department of Human Rights Protection of the General Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia and the procedural methods adopted by the  Supreme Court of Georgia.
Notably, this significant event is part of the large-scale campaign of the Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia. The prosecutor’s office of Georgia is holding the campaign “No to Femicide” against femicide with the aim to raise public awareness against gender and domestic violence against women and to prevent crime.
As per the government data  the crime against women is increasing day by day in Georgia. The cases of domestic violence are also rising which is seen as an issue of serious concern as well. Moreover  as per the data women are still the number one victim of domestic violence cases.
Although there are many NGOs and other civil organizations doing work to eliminate the violence against women, still incident are  being reported at a large scale from different regions of the country.
