Georgia: World Food Safety Day was celebrated widely in Georgia and organized by the Ministry of Environment and Agriculture and the National Food Agency.

Kakha Kakabadze, Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, attended the event and gave a welcome speech to the participants. A number of information and awareness activities were held on June 7, 2024, which is Food Safety Day.

Exhibition-sale of Georgian production food products was organized in Riki Park, Tbilisi; with the participation of the Environmental Protection Information and Education Center, an open lesson was held for pupils on the topic: “Food Safety – Myths and Facts.

“Congratulations on the Day of Food Safety to all the National Food Agency employees, business operators, every citizen of Georgia, our partners, and our small customers, who heard at today’s event how important it is to ensure food safety for their health and safety.” The information received from the agency specialists will help them make the right choice in the future,” Kakha Kakabadze noted.

Vasil Basiladze, Deputy Head of the National Food Agency, spoke about the importance of uniting all circles and involving them in ensuring food safety.

Involvement of all circles, coordinated work, and cooperation are crucial to ensure food security in the country. The National Food Agency has the most important role and function in this process. Our inspectors carry out more than 30,000 state inspections annually, communicate regularly with business operators and customers, update them on new food safety legislation, and share important updates. Collaborating with our international and donor organizations, several significant steps have been taken to implement food safety best practices. As a result, the percentage of violations decreases yearly, said Vasil Basiladze.

The Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture and its agencies, the Czech Development Agency, representatives of scientific circles, the business sector, and students attended the event.

This year, the message of World Food Safety Day is “Meet Ready Food Threats,” which focuses on identifying potential risks associated with food consumption and ways to prevent them. Residents and businesses should know how to purchase, prepare, and consume food safely and how to act in case of food poisoning.

World Food Safety Day is celebrated every year on June 7, by the initiative of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO).
