The Environmental Service of Tbilisi City Hall is carrying out forest-park restoration works on the former Varketili agricultural territory in Samgori district.
In this area, which has a total area of 8.2 hectares, illegal fences were dismantled, and pruning and cutting works were carried out. Today, the mayor of Tbilisi, Kakha Kaladze, was introduced to the process together with the deputy Andria Basilaya.
The Tbilisi Mayor noted, “In Samgori district, we are in the farm of former Varketili, where we are implementing a large-scale project. A recreational park will be built on an area of 8 hectares. The existing space was in a very difficult condition, disorganized. Within the project, walking paths, football, and basketball courts are being made, and different types of attractions are being determined for children.”
“Existing perennial trees and plants will be preserved, and new ones will be added. Irrigation and lighting systems will be set up. The project will be completed by the end of the year. Because it is a very large area, we have divided the work into several stages. Arrangement of some part of the territory in one month, and the project will be fully completed at the end of the year. Lots of families live in the neighborhood, and the locals will have plenty of space to rest, exercise, and relax. We will continue to implement such projects. In every district, in every district, there should be similar spaces, – said kakha Kaladze.
Work has been carried out in 2024 on the 3.7-acre site, including walking paths, an outdoor lighting network, park furniture, children’s and sports areas, as well as a drinking water fountain.
At this stage, work is underway on the remaining 4.5 hectares, where a modern recreational space will be created. Greening measures are already underway, and different types of trees and plants are being planted. In addition, basketball and football courts, sports, and children’s spaces will be set up.
It should be noted that the local council also rehabilitated the Akhmet Melashvili street, which is located near the forest park. Laid walkways and laid a double layer of asphalt.
Recreation of the recreational space will be completed by the end of 2026. The cost of the works is 6,500,000 GEL. Along with the mayor of Tbilisi, Paata Togonidze, the head of the Civil Service for Environmental Protection, and Samgori District Kakha Samkharadze were present.
