Georgia: On September 20, 2022, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Khatuna Totladze, held a meeting with the members of the Council of Europe delegation, whose purpose of the visit is to prepare the 26th consolidated report of the Secretary General of the Council of Europe – “Conflict in Georgia“.
At the meeting, the Georgian side provided the delegation of the Council of Europe with information about the serious situation in terms of security, humanitarian and human rights in Abkhazia and Tskhinvali regions occupied by Russia.
The deputy minister particularly drew attention to the dire situation in the region. He noted that Russia’s full-scale aggression against Ukraine threatens not only the Black Sea region but European security as a whole.
At the meeting, the provocative and illegal actions of Russia in the occupied regions and near the occupation line, which further aggravate the situation on the ground, were discussed.
The Georgian side spoke about the dynamics of international negotiations in Geneva and noted the importance of the effective functioning of international negotiations in Geneva in order to achieve progress on the main issues of the agenda – such as the fulfilment of international obligations assumed by Russia under the cease-fire agreement of August 12, 2008, as well as the safe and dignified return of internally displaced persons and refugees.
The meeting also emphasized the importance of resuming Incident Prevention and Response Mechanism (IPRM) meetings in Gali without any preconditions and the importance of smooth and regular functioning of Erneti IPRM.
The Georgian side spoke about the peace policy of the Georgian government and emphasized the importance of joint efforts in the direction of de-occupation of Georgian territories and peaceful resolution of the conflict. The deputy minister spoke about the need for unhindered access to international human rights mechanisms on the ground.
Khatuna Totladze drew attention to the importance of the issues related to the regions occupied by Russia being constantly on the agenda of the international community and, in this context, emphasized the consolidated reports of the Secretary-General.
