About Down SyndromeÂ
Down Syndrome is a genetic condition that is caused due to the presence of extra chromosome 21 in the body which leads to developmental delays, intellectual disabilities, and distinctive physical features.
Their physical features include a flattened face, almond-shaped eyes, and a sticked out tongue. Affected individuals are also slow learners with mild to moderate intellectual disabilities.Â
Individuals with Down Syndrome are at a greater risk of health problems such as heart defects, digestive problems, and vision and hearing problems.
There are three types of Down syndrome:
- Trisomy 21 – Most common type and has three copies of chromosome 21.
- Translocation Down Syndrome – The extra chromosome 21 gets attached to another chromosome.
- Mosaic Down Syndrome – Some cells have three copies of chromosomes while some have two.
There is no cure for Down Syndrome yet but certain symptoms and problems caused by the syndrome can be treated like heart and gastrointestinal defects.
