Georgia: The meeting of the Center for Innovation and High Technology was held on June 17, 2024, at the National Academy of Sciences of Georgia, on which the report of Dr. Merab Bolkvadze, professor of Technical University of Georgia, architecture was discussed: “Problems of Public Transport in Georgia and Foreign Countries.”

The meeting was attended by the President of the National Academy of Sciences of Georgia, academician Roin Metreveli, Head of the Center for Innovation and High Technologies, academician Giorgi Kvesitadze, Vice-President of the Academy, academician Ramaz Khurodze, Academician-Secretary of the Academy, Academician Vladimir Papava, academics, Center members and guests.

The rapporteur noted that spatial arrangement of the country, planning of cities and settlements, general land use plans, and development plans are only possible with transport, economy, environmental protection, sociology, and geography. City planning projects are multifaceted.

The main goals of the General Land Use Plan are to economize land and other resources, conserve ecology, protect essential sites, conserve groundwater, reduce transport, and support environmentally friendly transport.

Compact cities are a prerequisite for sustainable development and a solution to transport issues: They save natural resources and energy, reduce pollution, are short-distance cities, and relocate based on public transport. They also reduce negative environmental impact and improve population access to jobs and services.

The reporter discussed in detail the problems of transport infrastructure and solutions. It has been noted that almost all Georgian cities call foreign specialists to plan general land use plans because we do not have any.

German, French, and Dutch specialists usually participate in processing the MGGs of last year’s cities. On the one hand, this will protect us from mistakes. They have a lot of experience, but it is necessary to educate Georgian specialists. The report has generated a lot of interest. The reporter answered the questions of the public.
