Irine Tsakadze, the Deputy Minister of Health on Sunday attended the opening event of the information campaign of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. The Ministry campaign for the protection of children’s rights is being organized under the theme “Don’t take away their childhood” in Telavi.
It is to be specifically mentioned that the event was held to prevent crimes related to marriage in childhood. It also aims to raise public awareness and provide timely notification to law enforcement officers about this category of crimes. The law officers will take timely action against the culprits to mitigate the child marriage issue throughout the country, especially in the rural areas of Georgia.
It is noteworthy that the event was not just about the Deputy Minister’s attendance. The students, teachers, and principals of public schools in Telavi, along with representatives of various public agencies, were also present. They were all key participants in this important discussion on fighting early child marriage.
The representative also shared the data with the participants to show the number of early child marriages reported from different parts of the country and what the ministry is planning to tackle the problem with the involvement of members of civil society.
The representative of the ministry also motivates the attendees to raise their voices against childhood marriage. According to them children should be provided with all the opportunities to excel in life. Moreover the children who get married earlier have to suffer many physical and psychological abuse as well.
The attendees were informed about the different ways to contact the police in case of any immediate action to prevent childhood marriage. They were also apprised of the ministry’s services, such as number 112, a dedicated mobile application, the Silent Alarm (SOS) function, SMS, and video call services.
The attendees shared their valuable suggestions with the ministry representative, who assured them that work would be done on these suggestions soon.
