Georgia: The National Guard of Georgia was established on December 20, 1990, on the basis of the law adopted by the Supreme Council of Georgia. The National Guard was the first Georgian military formation on which the current defense forces of Georgia were formed and developed.
In the 90s of the last century, the National Guard was, in fact, the main core of the Georgian Armed Forces in the battles produced for the unity of Georgia. Military personnel and reservists of the National Guard took part in the Russian-Georgian war in 2008.
In 2003, at the recommendation of the U.S. Georgia State Guard base, General Poitris and the U.S European base, the reorganization of the National Guard began, resulting in the abolition of permanent combat subdivisions, heavy weapons and equipment transferred to regular troops, and the training of subdivisions complete with reservists began.
The National Guard’s priorities today are to prepare and train the Armed Forces Reserve, organize and carry out combat drills, carry out support and security operations during military operations, recruit citizens to the Defense Forces, supporting the civilian government in war and emergencies.
The National Guard conducts various ceremonies and events through the Honor Guard and the Military Parade Band.
Since 2015, twenty quick response units of the Georgian National Guard have been actively participating in the “Strong Support Mission” (RSM) in Afghanistan under the aegis of NATO, in which 37 military personnel have been awarded the medal “for saving lives“.
The National Guard Team Twenty has successfully participated, as well, in the Central African Republic, in the European Union-led military training mission (EUTM RCA).
Georgian National Guard actively cooperates with the US Georgia State National Guard, Estonian Defense League, Royal Home Guards of Denmark and Norway, Lithuanian National Defense Volunteer Forces, and Latvian and Ukrainian National Guards.
