New project discussion by education ministry begins

Georgia: The public discussion of the new project, the document of National Goals of General Education developed by the Ministry of Education, Science and Youth of Georgia, has begun.

The first working meeting was held at Tbilisi State University, where Tamar Makharashvili, Georgia’s Deputy Minister of Education, Science and Youth, participated.

The meeting was also attended by the Committee of Education, Science and Youth of the Parliament of Georgia, Committee of Human Rights and Civil Integration, Standing Parliamentary Council for Protection of Rights of the Child, Department of Human Rights of the Government Administration, Department of State Minister for Reconciliation and Civil Integration and Department of State Language, Environment Authorization of General Education Center, NATO and EU Information Center, General Education Institutions Board representatives, experts in the field, representatives of the school community – teachers, students, parents, principals of public and private schools, students.

Tamar Makharashvili introduced the attending community in detail to the principles that the document is based on and talked about correctly defining the national goals of general education in terms of building a value system for students. In addition, the Deputy Minister provided detailed information to the meeting participants regarding the feedback received regarding the document, which is intended to be considered when preparing the final version.

As the Deputy Minister noted, the feedback received from the participants during the meeting held within the framework of the public discussion will be processed, analyzed by specially created focus groups, and taken into account in drafting the final version of the document.

The meeting was held in question-and-answer mode, and the participants had the opportunity to learn about interesting topics and share their opinions. A new draft of the National Goals for General Education document has been approved by the participants.

On the Ministry’s initiative, such meetings will continue in the Future to engage the general public in the public discussion of the first version of the new document.

The National Goals of General Education document, a kind of Constitution of General Education, was approved in 2004 and has been kept the same for 20 years. 

That is why, as a result of long work, the Ministry of Education, Science and Youth of Georgia has prepared a new project of the National Goals of General Education document, which is aimed at the national-patriotic spirit, personal development, respect for the family institution, internationally recognized universal ethical principles and democratic values to create the environment.
