GCCA’s First strategy presents objectives for consumer protection

 Georgia: The first national strategy for the protection of consumer rights, 2024-2026, presents the goals and objectives of consumer protection policy. 

The plan includes the current status of consumer protection regulation and enforcement, existing challenges that various stakeholders face, and the essential measures needed to achieve a high level of consumer protection in Georgia.

The strategy has been developed with the help of international experts participating in the EU-financed TWINNING project at the Competition and Consumer Protection Agency of Georgia, National Commission for Energy and Water Supply Regulatory, National Commission of Georgia Non-governmental working on I Bank, National Food Agency, Communications Commission and Consumer Protection issues Considering the responses and recommendations received from the organizations.

The strategy reflects consumer protection and the international experience gained in the EU and other countries. Among them are:

  • The new agenda for consumer rights protection.
  • The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) recommendations.
  • The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) reports.

Also, the latest EU legislation for consumer protection and 2015, the Sustainable Development Goals, SDGs – the “agenda” of the world’s development for 2015-2030.

Public consultations are announced to complete the strategy from February 1, 2024, to February 9, 2024.

  • If desired, the entire strategy document will be provided to any interested person within the framework of public consultation.

The document will be discussed within the framework of public consultations in the Agency of Competition and Consumer Protection of Georgia on February 9, 2024, at 16:30. Interested people can attend the discussion.

Georgian Competition Agency

According to the Georgian Law on Competition, the Competition Agency of Georgia was established on April 14, 2014. It represents an independent regulatory body entitled to enforce competition legislation in Georgia. The principal objective of the Agency is to protect fair and undistorted competition in the Georgian market.
