Intergovernmental groups discuss chemical safety issues

An intergovernmental group of experts recently discussed the issues of a chemical safety project. The group was formed to overhaul the country’s chemical safety mechanism.

The participants of the meeting also discussed many other issues. At the occasion of this significant meeting of the intergovernmental group created within the framework of the project the participants also touched on the issues of developing and implementing the legislative framework at the national level. This also discussed the implementation of all the requirements of the Convention against Chemical Weapons.

 

Solomon Pavliashvili, who is the deputy minister of environment protection and agriculture while attending the meeting  underlined the importance of the project on this occasion  . According to him “This is a very significant project for the chemical security of the country. It is also  to be added the project also gained significance as its goal is to strengthen the legislative base and institutional capabilities of the country in the field of chemical safety.

 

It is worth mentioning that the  “Strengthening the Institutional Capacities of Chemical Safety in Georgia” is being implemented by the Ministry of Environment and Agriculture. It is also to be added that the project is being implemented with the support of the US Department of State’s Weapons of Mass Destruction Counterterrorism Division (WMDT) along with the collaboration of the  Regional Environmental Center of the Caucasus (REC Caucasus) since 2022.

 

Notably this  important and significant three-year project, which will be built with a total budget amount  of 1,500,000 USD, to strengthen the legal framework and institutional capacity in the field of chemical safety. The project will also underline the importance of non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, improvement of chemical substance management systems, and implementation of international and national obligations in the field of environmental protection.

 

The experts  while expressing their personal views  said that the strict regulation of chemical weapons is very much required to uplift the safety of chemical weapons as well. The non-proliferation of the chemical weapons was also highlighted by the experts of the events on occasion along with other topics of discussion as well.
