In a significant development, the administration of the Oni announced that it would host the Children Rugbey festival. The event will take place on June 15 at the central square of the municipality and children born between 2013 and 14 can participate.
The event is being held with the partnership of the Government of Georgia, Racha-Lechkhumi, and Kvemo Svaneti municipalities. At the same time the Rugby Union of Georgia is also supporting the event which is scheduled to be held for the first time.
The Rugby club “Amarantebi,” founded one year ago in Racha-Lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti is hosting the tournament. The participating teams were founded by businessmen Dimitri Abdushelishvili, Mamuka Murjikneli, Alexi Nikolaishvili, and Akaki Davitulian. They built these teams with the support of Lechkhumi, Lentekhi, Ambrolauri, and Oni municipalities and the Georgian Rugby Union.
It should be mentioned explicitly that before this the children’s rugby match was not even held in the municipality. The main goal of organizing this project is to encourage the youth of municipalities to adopt a healthy lifestyle. It also aims to promote the sports culture in the municipality with a special focus on Rugby.
As per the information, there will be sixteen teams to take part in the festival, and most of them (14) represent Western Georgia. These teams include “Tsekur” of Tsageri, “Datvevi” of Lentekhi, “Rachveli” of Oni-Ambrolauri, “Chakvi” of Chakvi, “Ponto” of Kobuleti, “Batumi” of Batumi, “Phoenix” of Samtredia, “Dinosaur” of Tskaltubo, “Aya” of Kutaisi, “Eagles” of Ozurgeti, “Mathe” of Chiatura, “Jruchi” of Sachkheri, “Jikha” of Senaki and “Kolkh Knights” of Poti.
At the same time two teams have been Invited from the Kakheti region. These teams include the “Tigers” from Patardzeuli and “Kiziq” from Sighnaghi. The games will start at the central square of Oni municipality at 13:00 and last until 18:00.
The event organizers while expressing their views said that they want the festival to become larger in the future and include foreign teams in addition to Tbilisi and Eastern Georgia.
