Otar Shamugia meets Michael Frankom to discuss trade in agricultural products

The Minister of Environment and Agriculture, Otar Shamugia, met the Regional Head of the Department of Agriculture of the United States, Michael Frankom.

They discussed the issues of trade in agricultural products, the situation in the cattle sector, the results of the survey “Assessment of the wheat sector of Georgia”, and challenges in this regard.

Otar Shamugia thanked the US Department of Agriculture for its support.

The Minister said, “We have had productive cooperation with the United States Department of Agriculture over the years; we are implementing several programs jointly and producing significant results.”

He also said, “In the agricultural sector, our priorities are to support the development of the livestock sector, promote modern technologies and food safety standards, and promote agro-food production. Supporting farmers and entrepreneurs through targeted programs that we implement will undoubtedly continue. “

“We are working under the contract of associations to fulfil our obligations in agriculture and environmental protection. “After receiving EU candidate status, the support of USDA and our other partners will be even more important”, said Otar Shamugia.

At the meeting, the minister focused on Kansas State University (USA) research “Assessment of Georgia’s wheat sector”, supported by USDA. Otar Shamugia highlighted the research results and challenges in wheat production and realization.

As the Minister noted, using quality seed materials, implementing events on a calendar timeframe and improving irrigation infrastructure is essential to overcome challenges.

At the meeting, Otar Shamugia also spoke about the steps taken by the state to improve irrigation infrastructure.

Michael Frankom, Regional Director of the Department of Agriculture of the United States, noted that obtaining the status of a candidate for membership in the European Union will be an essential step forward for Georgia. He also emphasized the importance of Georgia’s role in the “Transcaspian International Transport Corridor” and the country’s potential.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Minister of Environment and Agriculture Tengiz Nasaridze, representatives of the relevant services of the Ministry of Environment and Agriculture and the US Department of Agriculture.
