Otar Shamugia meets Thomas Erikson, Regional Director of GCF

The Minister of Environment and Agriculture of Georgia Otar Shamugia met with Regional Director of the Green Climate Fund (GCF) Thomas Erikson in the framework of the United Nations Conference on Climate Change Parties (COP 29) in Baku, Azerbaijan.

The Minister of Environment and Agriculture of Georgia Otar Shamugia met with Regional Director of the Green Climate Fund (GCF) Thomas Erikson in the framework of the United Nations Conference on Climate Change Parties (COP 29) in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Otar Shamugia has positively appreciated the cooperation with the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and the projects that promote climate change mitigation, natural disaster preparedness, and sustainable forest management in Georgia.

“It is very important to develop early warning systems across the country that aim to obtain reliable information about threats and climate risks which is evidence of our successful collaboration.” “With the support of GCF, we installed hydrological, meteorological, and agrometeorological equipment and started monitoring in flood areas; also, we completed the compilation of hydrometeorological and geological threats maps in both eastern and western Georgia,” said Otar Shamugia.

According to the minister, the GCF-supported programs in land recovery, sustainable agriculture, water resources, and sustainable forest management will directly benefit rural communities in Georgia and help them adapt to changing climate conditions.

According to Otar Shamugia, the Georgian government has significantly increased funding from the state budget for environmental projects; meanwhile, it is important to support international donor organizations to become more proactive in implementing initiatives that help mitigate climate change.

Thomas Erikson positively assessed the progress of the projects implemented and planned in Georgia and the accents put out by the Minister. He expressed his readiness for close cooperation in the future.

First Deputy Minister Nino Tandilashvili attended the meeting with the Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia.

COP 29 in Baku

The 2024 United Nations Climate Change Conference or Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC, more commonly known as COP29, is the 29th United Nations Climate Change Conference. COP29 is being held in Baku, Azerbaijan, from 11 to 22 November 2024.
