Georgia: A joint presentation of the Human Rights Protection and Civil Integration Committee and the Personal Data Protection Service was held in the Parliament regarding the implementation of the new law on the “Protection of Personal Data”.

Ghonidzeba was opened by the chairman of the Committee for Protection of Human Rights and Civil Integration. According to Mikhiel Sarjveladze, the new law in force from today, issues related to personal data in our country will be regulated by European standards.

“We can confidently say that today, in terms of personal data protection and through its legislative framework, Georgia will become a state that regulates personal data issues with European standards. This is an important achievement of our country and at the same time, not a small contribution to the work of European integration of the country, both in formal terms of viewpoint and in terms of content, because it is especially important to protect personal data in the modern era”, – said the chairman of the committee.

The head of the Personal Data Protection Service Lela Janashvili presented the main news of the law and the activities carried out in the implementation process to the audience, as well as provided information about the recommendations made by the service.

“Today, when we have been granted the status of EU candidate country and are in the process of European integration, it is extremely important for us to harmonize the legislation on personal data protection with that of EU legislation.”

Adoption of Georgia’s new law on “Protection of Personal Data” is very important for the protection of personal data, assertment of the most important constitutional right to touch the personal life of a person, fulfillment of international obligations, and establishment of internationally recognized principles and best practices. ”- said Lela Janashvili.

It should be noted that Leonardo Servera Navas, Secretary General of the European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS), was present and addressed the audience.

“The Georgian Personal Data Protection Supervisory Body is a very active member in the international data protection arena and an example of this is the successful hosting of the Central and Eastern European Data Protection Supervisory Bodies meeting in Tbilisi. The European Data Protection Supervisor has seen the determination of the Georgian Personal Data Protection Service and the quality of the work done, which is confirmed by Professor Lela Janashvili and the service’s participation in the meetings of the European Data Protection Council – with the status of observer.

The personal data protection law, which has just entered into force, is very good news for Georgia and the EU, not only because it brings our framework closer, but also because it confirms the ability of your country to face new challenges,” said Leonardo Servera Navas.

The head of the Council of Europe Georgia Office Natalia Vutova addressed the participants of the event with a welcome speech. The members of the Georgian Parliament and Government were attending the presentation. Also, representatives of the diplomatic corps, and international and non-governmental organizations.
