Georgia: The Prime Minister of Georgia, Irakli Garibashvili, on Friday, discussed Georgia’s new defence code with the defence minister, Juansher Burchuladze, along with other officials. The discussions were made on the aspects regarding modernising the conscript and reserve systems and providing the service members with better social and living conditions.

The officials from the body noted that the recent code is scheduled to be submitted for parliamentary approval by the end of this year. The new code would establish a new approach in the managerial system, thus forming an all-new, flexible system for military conscription.

As per the Georgian prime minister, the new code looks forward to providing accommodation to the military personnel of Georgia and legally regulating their social guarantees. Garibashvili stressed the creation of adequate conditions for servicemembers and the provision of social guarantees to be the top priority of his government.

Garibashvili highlighted the serious increase in the defence ministry budget as the economy exhibited double-digit growth this year. Further, stating that 1000 servicemembers and their families are to be designated with residential blocks on Makhata Hill in Tbilisi – the project of building 39 seven-storey blocks, once the project is completed.

Earlier in September, the defence minister had appreciated the conditions that Georgia provides its servicemembers, calling it way better than in most of the European states and said the ₾80 million ($28 million) increase in budget funding for the ministry this year would also be used for the implementation of “medium- and long-term projects” with support of foreign partners that includes the acquisition of anti-aircraft, anti-tank and anti-armour systems.

Adding further, he said that his body has performed all ‘all key reforms’ to ensure ‘better-than-ever’ conditions for the country’s military personnel, stating that all promises that PM Garibashvili made while being in the position of defence minister between 2019-2021 for the social welfare of armed forces have been fulfilled.
