Georgia’s Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze addressed United Nations General Assembly (UNGA ) members on Wednesday. In his address PM highlighted the significance of global peace with special reference to the “Peace Formula Initiative” to end the Ukraine-Russia conflict.
In the beginning of his address PM recalled the first session of UNGA held in 1946. The first session called upon all member countries to unite for global peace and security.
PM said “As a responsible member of the international community, Georgia actively promotes global peace measures. For more than two decades we have contributed significantly to NATO and EU missions worldwide. Moreover Georgia is among the largest contributors to NATO missions in Iraq and Afghanistan. 32 brave Georgian soldiers made the ultimate sacrifice in Afghanistan and hundreds of others were injured in ensuring freedom and international peace.”
“We are fighting to ensure peace, prosperity, progress, and stability for everyone. It is very sad that we have witnessed war in Ukraine. We understand what challenges Ukraine is currently facing and express our solidarity with the Ukrainian people. Since the beginning of the war the Government of Georgia has been providing significant humanitarian aid both to the war-torn country and to those currently living in Georgia,” added the PM.
In addition the PM spoke on a peace initiative to bring stability to the South Caucasus region. He stressed that “Recognizing the price of peace, we are making every effort to turn our immediate region the South Caucasus from a zone of conflict into a peaceful region full of opportunities. We wholeheartedly welcomed the peaceful settlement of the conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia.”
As per PM almost eight decades have passed since the creation of the United Nations and we are still fighting for peace. Unfortunately in a conflict-ridden world the rules-based international order is constantly being challenged which pose risks to peace and stability.
According to PM, peace and security along with human rights protection and development are the cornerstones of the work of the United Nations. Respect for international law and the rules-based international order is the foundation of a peaceful, prosperous and just world.
At the end of his address the PM once again reiterates the importance of the Peace Formula Initiative. He also emphasizes that only by observing the UN Charter and the principles of international law we will be able to fulfill our promise.
