Roseau, Dominica: Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit of Dominica reported on the progress of the International Airport project, which he called the most significant infrastructural project in Dominica’s history.
He also mentioned other significant projects in progress or planned for the country, such as the cable car project, the Roseau enhancement project, and the geothermal plant project.
The Prime Minister spoke to the nation during a press conference on Thursday, December 20, 2023. He said that the work on the International Airport project has moved fast over the past months, with the shipment of construction equipment earlier this year.
PM Skerrit added that the asphalt mixing plant and crusher were being worked on and that the construction process was entering a phase where the focus would be runway development.
Dr Roosevelt said the work would soon start on the primary runway, which would be used for take-off and landing. He also noted that the geotechnical work, which started last year, was moving along with the earthworks and that more than 50% of the planned 600 boreholes had been completed.
He said that a critical component of the platform development was the management of the water and waterways on the site and that up to five significant culverts had been identified to ensure that this would be done safely.
The minister said that the administration continued to meet with significant airlines and keep them updated about the project development and interim development at the Douglas Charles Airport, the current main airport of Dominica.
The PM stressed that the International Airport project was among several major projects in the works for Dominica, which would have the potential to transform and sustain the country’s economy.
He said the project was expected to be completed in 2025 and would be the best airport in the region. He said that the project was funded by the Citizenship by Investment Program, which allows foreign investors to obtain Dominican citizenship by investing in the country.
