Tbilisi: The public defender of Georgia, Levan loseliani on November 27, 2024 held a meeting with representatives of the civil sector operating in Akhalkalaki. The meeting was held within the framework of the 16-day campaign to combat violence against women.
The meeting discussed what are the necessary measures that should be taken for strengthening of the civil sector of Georgia. At the same time they have also discussed the needs and challenges being faced by civil society organisations across country.
In the meeting the public defender and representatives of civil society organisations have also discussed the current situation in the municipality in terms of human rights protection, their progress, gender equality and women’s empowerment, youth migration and social security.
On this occasion both sides emphasized the need to conduct information campaigns to raise civic awareness and involve ethnic minorities in the decision-making process. The involvement of civil society members in decision making will be helpful for smooth function of these organisation as well.
The participants of the meeting expressed their willingness to deepen cooperation with the Public Defender’s Office and outlined future plans. They also asked Public Defender to organise more awareness camp so that people from all region of county can get information about their rights.
The event was held with the joint efforts of the Public Defender’s Office and the Georgian Office of UN Women. It is worth noting that the above-mentioned event is part of a cycle of meetings that the Public Defender holds with representatives of the civil sector in the regions.
Till now many meetings have already been conducted which witnesses’ participation of huge number of civil populations. The Georgian Public defender while sharing his views about domestic violence said that we need to take more initiative so that this social evil of domestic violence can be reduced in country.
He urged civil society organisation to launch collective efforts with joint coordination for protection of women rights. Moreover protection of women rights is essential for healthy democracy and national unity.
