Levan Ioseliani, Georgia’s public defender  is on an official visit to the Racha region of the country for two days, July 16-17. He   met the local representative of the Ambrolauri and Oni municipalities here.

On the occasion  he met representatives of civil and public organizations working in Ambrolauri. He talked about the issues outlined in the 2023 parliamentary report on the situation of human rights and freedoms in Georgia. At the same time  he reviewed the challenges identified during past years regarding human rights and the recommendations given to the relevant agencies for their immediate solutions.

It is to be added that the participants of the meeting of these municipalities  discussed the state of human rights protection and the needs and other issues being faced by the population of these municipalities. They  talked about the challenges faced by non-governmental organizations and the effects of the foreign agent’s law on the workings of NGOs and other civil society organizations.

On the other hand  at the information meetings held in Ambrolauri and Oni  the public defender introduced the office’s orders to students and young people in public schools. He   talked about the rights of the child, the legal mechanisms to eliminate harmful practices of marriage and engagement at an early age, bullying and its likely consequences, violence against women, and the availability of health services.

The public defender further explained to the children how the police should behave when dealing with minors and what rights children enjoy when the police stop them. He further indicated who they should contact if they think their or any other child’s rights are violated.

Later  during the visit  the public defender visited the Oni synagogue. The Oni Synagogue was built 130 years ago, since long time  has no religious function due to the small number of parishioners. It is a monument which  reflects Georgia’s cultural heritage. At the meeting with the representatives of the Jewish community  among other things  the demand related to the rehabilitation of the synagogue was discussed.
