Georgia: Within the framework of the slimming infrastructure projects, Minister of Environment and Agriculture Otar Shamugia inspected the rehabilitation works on Lake Reservoir on the Kakheti side with State Trustee Giorgi Aladashvili and Chairman of the Committee on Agrarian Affairs of the Georgian Parliament Gela Samkharauli.
The Georgian Melioration in Gurjaani Municipality implements a project worth 3.6 million Gel.
Minister Otar Shamugia said, “Rehabilitation-modernization of irrigation systems is one of the most important directions for us. We are carrying out large-scale work all over the country. The ongoing project at the Lakbe reservoir ensures the safe functioning of the reservoir; meanwhile, the reservoir’s capacity has increased by about 600,000 cubic meters, which is very important, especially in the drought period, for water supply to the land areas connected to the reservoir. “
“It is noteworthy that we have attracted an unprecedented amount of investments, of over $300 million, from 4 different financial institutions. This investment will serve to implement very important and large-scale projects in the country. Jobs will rise next year, which is very important for every farmer in terms of their productivity and crop quality,” said Otar Shamugia.
Gela Samkharauli noted regarding the progress of the reconciliation works in the Kakheti region that this year, at the current stage, 14 projects worth about 37 million GEL are being implemented, which is vital for the development of agriculture in the region. Due to recent climate changes, it is impossible to produce a quality product without a water supply.
Works on Lake Reservoir will ensure its proper functioning and improve water supply to the left-hand highway channel of the Lower Samgori irrigation system. Consequently, 2755 hectares of agricultural land will be irrigated, significantly increasing yields.
The rehabilitation works began in autumn 2023 and will be completed at the end of this year.
