Moscow: Russian President Vladimir Putin has allowed UN officials to visit and inspect the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant. The Kremlin had announced the move after Putin held a telephonic conversation with French President Emmanuel Macron. The claims of four civilians being injured at Russian shelling near the plant had been the driving force behind this move.

Also, the United States has vowed to send additional arms and weapons to support Ukraine in its war against Russia.

In a statement from Kremlin, President Putin had agreed to provide the necessarily required assistance to the UN officials to visit and investigate from the ground, the entire circumstances at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant.

Russia has occupied the plant since March. However, the Ukrainian researchers and technicians continue to operate under the direction and supervision of the Russian troops.

“Both leaders duly understand the significance” of sending the IAEA experts to the plant for an assessment of “the situation on the ground”, the official statement from the Kremlin read.

The director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has welcomed this statement from Putin and expressed his willingness to pay a personal visit to the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant for a thorough inspection of the site.

“In these crucial times, it is of vital importance that no such actions are taken that could further endanger the safety and security of one of the world’s largest nuclear power plants,” as stated by Rafael Grossi, the director general of IAEA.

The Ukrainian President has also welcomed the Russian President’s statement. “If Russian blackmail with radiation continues, this summer may go down in the history of various European countries as one of the most tragic of all time,” he said.

On the other hand, Kyiv has blamed Russia for developing the complex into a military base ,deploying military equipments and weapons. Moreover, using the complex as a shield to attack the towns across the Dnieper River.
