Philip J Pierre, the Prime Minister of Saint Lucia, extended his congratulations to women parliamentarians on the establishment of the Women’s Parliamentary Caucus of Saint Lucia.
It is to be noted that the Government of Saint Lucia led by the (SLP) Labour Party made many historic policy decisions a few days ago. These included creating the Women’s Parliamentary Caucus of Saint Lucia, securing budgetary financing from IDA(International Development Association), earmarking $80 million for sporting infrastructure, establishing a new tourism development fund etc.
The establishment of the Women’s Parliamentary Caucus is one of the historic decisions lauded by everyone. As per the latest development it has now been officially established. .
The motion in this regard was tabled in the Lower House by the Acting Minister for Gender Affairs, Hon. Jeremiah Norbert. While introducing the motion the minister stated that this is the Government’s decision that aligns with the Prime Minister’s vision to improve gender equality and promote gender equity in the island nation which will further set an example for other Caribbean nations to follow.
Notably the newly created Women’s Parliamentary Caucus of Saint Lucia is bipartisan and it will involve women parliamentarians of the past and those currently serving in parliament.
This will provide a golden opportunity to all women aspiring to pursue careers in politics and serve in the Legislature. Moreover it will also build capacity among women parliamentarians in Saint Lucia while improving their access to resources from global gender advocacy groups, NGO’s etc.
At the same time this platform will provide a dedicated level playing field for gender-based policy development and issues affecting women and local marginalised groups.
Prime Minister Philip J Pierre also took to his Facebook page and stated “Yesterday I was proud to be part of a Parliament that approved the establishment of the Women’s Parliamentary Caucus of Saint Lucia”.
“I have promised to extend my full support to its mission and objectives as ,I believe in the protection, freedom, and promotion of women in our society,” added the PM.
Meanwhile social media users also appreciated the government’s decision to take progressive measures to make women’s empowerment possible.
