Tbilisi: The US Ambassador to Georgia, Kelly Degnan had stated that she hasn’t been aware if any sanctions have been planned against the ruling Georgia Dream Party’s founder Bidzina Ivanishvili. However, she has said that imposing sanctions on Russia is really an effective tool.
In her statement during the Tbilisi International Conference, Degnan said that “I can say that sanctions are really an important tool, and they can be really effective, it is clearly visible in Russia; that will continue to be imposed in Russia in the upcoming months as the sanctions that the world has imposed against Russia would continue to remain in force. The United States doesn’t preview our sanctions policies. They are not announced until they are imposed, and that’s all I have to say.”
Speaking about Georgia’s European Union Candidacy, the ambassador said that the 12 recommendations that have been set up by the European Union for Georgia’s membership candidate status would really require Georgia’s leaders and entire Georgian population.
“This is an important opportunity for the country. It’s a very normal process to have different views about how to address the 12 recommendations, and it would send a very strong signal to the European Union and Georgia to integrate the different views that are being put forth. Good work is being done on how to respond to the 12 recommendations,” Degnan said.
According to her, the current task was to bring together into an integrated document that reflects diversity of the views in Georgia. . The European Union seeks to bring out that voice of unity brought out together.
