Georgia: Solomon Pavliashvili, Deputy Minister of Environment and Agriculture, participated in the regional event opening the project “Green Future, Establishment of Rights and Stability,” supported by the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and UNDP.
The Deputy Minister thanked the organizers of the event and noted that green transformation is essential to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals set for 2030 and tackling climate change. Reducing the carbon footprint and supporting countries by implementing smart, innovative, and green solutions makes this possible.
Georgia aims to develop a coherent and sustainable climate change policy and fulfill international obligations, particularly the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the EU-Georgian Association Agreements.
Georgia has started developing a road map, strategy, and action plan for the circular economy. This is an important step to support the implementation of modern approaches to waste management, innovative technologies, new investment, and the creation of more green jobs. With the help of the Government of the Kingdom of Sweden, the country’s circularity was evaluated. Informative meetings were held to promote awareness of the circular economy.
“After signing the Association Agreement with the European Union, we created the National Waste Management Legislation and the National Waste Management Strategy (2016-2030 year) and received national waste management action plans. The strategy also includes directions and measures for biodegradable waste management policy. The implementation of the strategy and action plan will help the principles of circular economy and modern waste management technologies in Georgia,” Solomon Pavliashvili said.
He also noted, “We have already taken the first steps towards implementing the expanded manufacturer liability system in our country and adopted several legislative acts on various waste streams such as tires, batteries, and electrical waste.”
The Deputy Minister emphasized the importance of regional cooperation, providing an excellent opportunity to share experiences, achievements, and best practices between countries.
