In the latest series of developments, a new automatic station has been added to the existing atmospheric air quality Monitoring Network of Tbilisi. This addition is part of initiatives under the project called “Save Nature-Georgia”. This project is being implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment Protection in collaboration with the Swedish government.
As per the available information, till the end of the year 2023, there is a plan to add eight automatic and one mobile station for better monitoring of the air quality in the city of Tbilisi.
On this occasion, many dignitaries were present, including Otar Shamugia, the Minister of Environment and Agriculture; Nino Tandilashvili, the first deputy minister; and the head of the development cooperation of the Sweden Embassy in Georgia. Deputy head of mission Eric lives.
Representations of the ministry, the national agency for the environment, international organisations, government and non-governmental sector, were also present at the occasion.
Otar Shamugia, the minister of agriculture and environment, while addressing the participants, stressed that the support of regional and global partners is invaluable and will be very helpful for the implementation of projects relating to air pollution prevention.
It is to be specifically mentioned that in the past few years, air quality has become a matter of concern in the country. A movement to raise awareness regarding environmental issues was started a few years ago.
Many campaigns and movements were launched to spread awareness regarding environmental issues, leading to the implementation of many laws and regulations on environmental protection.
Many other strict provisions were also introduced to contain the deteriorating air quality in Georgia. One of the major successes of this provision is the example of the Rustavi cement factory. The factory, under the provisions of the new law, has already installed filters to capture the emissions from the factory.
The new legal provisions have brought many significant improvements and reduced air pollution.
