Tbilisi, Georgia: The Court of Appeal upholds the ruling of the City Court, by which, by a corrupt scheme, the former president of Georgia, Mikheil Saakashvili, was sentenced to 9 years imprisonment.
The Court of Appeal of Tbilisi upholds the verdict of the Tbilisi City Court on wasting large amounts of money owed to the state budget and a corruption scheme. The former president of Georgia, Mikheil Saakashvili, was found guilty. Also, the former chief of the well-known State Security Special Service – Teimuraz Janashia, was convicted, whose action, instead of wasting, was judged by the court as abuse of power.
During the court hearing, it was confirmed that in March 2009, it became known through mass information that Mikheil Saakashvili had sex with a massage therapist, Dorothy Steini, in Georgia. “Dr. Dot” was invited, and the payment for his services was made from the president’s representative’s expenses.
Because the expenses of the Georgian President’s Administration and the State Provision Agency were public, it was necessary to prevent the disclosure of the facts of the unintentional use of representative expenses. For this purpose, Mikheil Saakashvili created a corrupt scheme to obtain material security at the expense of the state budget and made the state secrets a criminal system created to satisfy his material desires.
Specifically, to artificially create a legal basis, in 2009-2013, Mikheil Saakashvili issued “secret” disputes and instructed the Special Service of State Defense to pay such costs, which could not be financed legally by the Administration of the President of Georgia and the State Provision Agency of the Republic of Georgia.
The Court of Appeal of Tbilisi found Mikheil Saakashvili guilty of Article 182 of Article 2 “D” and Part 3 “B” sub-paragraph of the Criminal Code of Georgia and did not impose imprisonment for 9 years. Regarding Teimuraz Janashia, instead of wasting his action was considered an abuse of his authority under Article 332 of the Criminal Code, and he was fined 300,000 Gel.
The Georgian Prosecutor’s Office will appeal the court’s decision in Teimuraz Janashia’s case within the period stipulated by law.
It is to be reminded that Mikheil Saakashvili has been sentenced to 12 years and 6 months in prison by joint verdicts. Also, the European Court of Human Rights discussed the case of two criminal cases – the death of Sandro Girgvliani and the attack on Valeri Gelashvili – the fact of which fraudulent verdicts have already been passed, and found that the justice system was fair, grounded by adequate evidence, and did not intend to remove the accused from political life.
