Tbilisi: The Foreign Ministry of Georgia on Wednesday expressed its ‘utter concern’ over the recent visit of Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko to Georgia’s Russian-occupied territory of Abkhazia.
The Ministry stated that the Ambassador of Belarus to Georgia, Anatoly Lis, has been called on to express the resentment at the Georgian end. Meetings with the Georgian Ambassador were held regarding the recent visit of President of the Republic of Belarus to the Russian-occupied Abkhazia region and holding conversations with the representatives of the occupation regime.
Georgia has expressed its deep concerns over the matter and further asked for clarifications from Belarus’s end.
As per the local sources, the Belarusian President, in the meeting discussed security challenges and agendas of cooperation in certain fields. This was Lukashenko’s first visit to the occupied region since he held the office. It was in 2018 that he last visited the Georgian capital, Tbilisi.
Meanwhile, Bzhania expressed hopes about President’s visit giving a new enthusiasm and boosting relations between the two sides.
Since the Russo-Georgian war in 2008, Russia has recognized two Georgian regions of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali as independent states. However, only Venezuela, Nikaraua, Nauru and Syria have followed suit.While Belarus has refrained from making any moves.
Belarus is considered a close ally of Russia that has so far stood in Russian favour for its invasion of Ukraine.
