Georgia: A presentation of the opinions of “Friend of the Court”, organized by the Tbilisi Free University School of Law and supported by the USAID Law Program, will be held on March 22, 2024, Friday, at 6:30 pm.
The opinion of “Friend of the Court” (Amicus Curiae), jointly prepared by Tbilisi Free University and Batumi Shota Rustaveli State University, was presented in the Constitutional Court of Georgia on the case Eka Areshidze, Ketevan Meskhishvili, Madona Maisuradze, Mamuka Tsiklauri and Tamar Khajomia against the Parliament of Georgia (case N3/14/1693), where the plaintiffs will sue English by the Parliament of Georgia on December 30, 2021 “About the General Courts” amendments to the Organic Law of Georgia, which, among other issues, defined a new basis for judges’ disciplinary responsibility and a judge’s visit to another court.
The plaintiffs, who are current judges, believe the changes mentioned limit both their ability to exercise their duties as a judge by the constitutionally protected standards, as well as their freedom of thought and expression.
The presentation of opinion of “Friend of the Court” will be presented by Viktor Yagutiani and Rusudan Gochitashvili of the Law School of Tbilisi Free University.
The second opinion of the court friend was prepared on the case against Irakli Khvadagiani of Georgia, the Government of Georgia, and the Minister of Justice of Georgia. The constitutional lawsuit concerns the right to access the public information contained in archives, including the constitutionality of restrictions on personal information protection and high fees for accessing information. The presentation of the opinion of “Friend of the Court” will be led by the students of Tbilisi Free University Law School.
The presentations will be moderated by the invited lecturer of Tbilisi Free University Giorgi Beraia. The presentation of the opinions of the “court friend” will be held on the Kakha Bendukidze campus, in a small conference hall, near the library.
Anyone can attend this presentation as it is free of cost.
