Tbilisi: The lawmaker from the ruling Georgian Dream party, Irakli Khakhubi, was found dead at his house in Tbilisi early on Thursday. The police have been investigating the incident for a suspected suicide death. The MP was lying dead next to a firearm, giving rise to speculations towards him committing suicide.
As per the Interior Ministry’s initial statements, foul play cannot be totally ruled out from this case. Over this, a probe has been launched for further details, with suicide being considered the most likely cause of death.
The Georgian PM expressed his grief over his demise, saying, “our political team, parliament and the Georgian public have lost a true patriot, high-ranking professional and honourable person”.
The 51-year-old Georgian lawmaker had been suffering from various health disorders following the unfortunate death of his 21-year-old son, Beka Khakhubia, in a road accident in an attempt to escape from the police. The patrol police officers had blocked the road with a truck into which Khakhubia crashed his car.
Later, these police officers were sentenced to imprisonment for being guilty of this fatal accident.
Khakhubia has since then been suffering from multiple health issues, as told by his relatives. He has been serving in the Georgian Parliament and representing the Georgian Dream ruling party since 2016.
