Tbilisi, Georgia: The 11th International Conference of the International Silkwear Association (BACSA), “Use of Traditional Silk Knowledge for Cultural, Creative Industries and Tourist Purpose” (CULTUSERI 2025), was held in Tbilisi from November 16 to 21, 2025.

Representatives from 13 countries participated in the conference, including Bulgaria, Italy, China, Japan, and several other countries. Conference participants presented the findings of the latest research and practical experience in silk production, selection, innovative technologies, and modern use of traditional knowledge.

At the conference, Nargiz Baramidze, head of the Laboratory of Silkworm of the Scientific and Research Center of Agriculture, presented the report.

“Silkworm Genopond and its Importance in Georgian Silk Revival”, where the importance of preserving Georgian genetic resources of mulberry silk, the diversity of species, and their use prospects were discussed.

During the conference, the participants visited the silken laboratory on the base of the SIP Agricultural Scientific and Research Center, where they learned about the ongoing research and practical work.

The laboratory serves to maintain the gene pool of mulching, produce new varieties, implement selection programs, and care for mulching, as well as develop innovative technologies in the field of silking and the actual use of traditional knowledge in practice. The ancient folk species and species obtained by scientific selection are protected in the gene fund, which still provides high-quality Georgian silk.

This conference provides an important platform for international cooperation, knowledge, and best practices sharing among countries to promote sustainable development of the silk sector at the global level.

The event was held in cooperation with Horizon Europe’s ARACNE project and organized by the Georgian State Silk Museum, Georgian Agrarian University, and Science-Research Center of Agriculture.
