Tbilisi, Georgia: The Mayor of Tbilisi, Kakha Kaladze, together with Vice-Mayor Giorgi Tkemaladze, inspected the ongoing works in the metro station “Varketili”. The inspection works were done on Monday, August 11, 2025.

At this stage, based on the conclusion of the Levan Samkharauli National Bureau of Expertise, rehabilitation works of the lower Bakni reinforced concrete arch and the bended tunnel bridge attachments are underway.

As the mayor of the capital noted, part of the works currently being carried out will be completed at the end of August, and the metro station will resume passenger services.

“The rehabilitation of the metro station ‘Varketili‘ is underway. The station is unable to receive passengers as of today because we said it would be closed for 45 days, ” the mayor noted.

Kakha Kaladze also mentioned, “Works that are currently underway and have been an emergency will be completed at the end of August, and we will be able to accommodate passengers. Arch reinforcement is currently being carried out so that the structures that will be installed will not have problems in the future. We will be able to complete the renovations by the end of the year, and the station will be completely rehabilitated. “

“In addition, we have certain subway stations that need to be renovated. Together with the European Reconstruction and Development Bank, we have already announced an expression of interest,” said the Mayor of Tbilisi.

“I think there will be a great interest from foreign companies to have the metro stations completely renovated and organized,” added Kakha Kaladze.

Due to the volume of rehabilitation works and technological specifications, to ensure passenger safety and reduce working hours, the metro station “Varketili” was closed for 45 days on July 12. During this period, corroded/damaged surfaces of the ceiling will be cleaned and treated, and the gaps beyond the arch will be filled with appropriate technical solutions. Also, sealing the arch temperature seams/seams to prevent groundwater leaks.

After the completion of this process, the paving works, which are scheduled to be completed in the autumn of this year, will resume.

Along with the mayor of the capital, Deputy Mayor Irakli Bendeliani, General Director of “Tbilisi Transport Company” Giorgi Sharkov, and Samgori district manager Kakha Samkharadze were present.
