Irakli Bendeliani, first vice-mayor of Tbilisi with delegation of Kakha Kaladze, Mayor of Tbilisi visited Rustaveli avenue and observed restoration works at the roads. A walk on the first stage was held, completed works were reviewed and conversations were conducted with workers.
Rustaveli avenue: the main street of Tbilisi and the city where everyone walks Tbilisi, meets friends and goes out. It is on Rustaveli avenue and there are all sorts of theaters, museums, shops and cafes. Every day in the street there are many people, it is for this reason that all the restoration works are so vital for the city.
New road surface will be laid underground pipework and cables will be laid down with new street lighting, both existing and new. Drainage will be improved so that water runs off the road. Public access Streets are open to the public and should be accessible to everyone. This is why the new paving will be more walkable, the ramps more accessible and the crossings more visible so that it’s easier for everyone to walk on, particularly older people, parents with pushchairs and anyone else for whom it is more difficult to walk to cross the road.
Kaladze said. “Rustaveli Avenue is the face of our city,” he told reporters. “We want anyone to be able to walk on it and I don’t want any person to be scared or worried.”
The mayor then expressed gratitude to the workers for the time that they will take. He ordered the work to be completed quickly and to cause as much damage as possible to the residents and the inhabitants working there. He appreciated the members of the general public for their patience.
“It’s not a quick process,” Bendeliani said, “and it will give folks still access to their house and the street. Traffic is still running, residents still have access to the street, they are just changing the flow if necessary, and city crews are ready to respond.”
On the eve of their departure, the mayor informed the workers of some finishing touches, like: what building materials are to be used; the flowers and trees to be planted beside the roads. “After the finishing touch, Rustaveli avenue will be a perfect venue for pastime, entertainment, tourism and cultural events,” the mayor said.
City staff will track construction and post updates as construction continues.
