Tbilisi, Georgia: Due to the death of Georgian Catholic-Patriarch Ilia II, restrictions will be imposed on the movement of transport throughout Tbilisi on March 21, 2026.
The Tbilisi City Hall shared the announcement via its official Facebook Page on March 20, 2026, Friday. The restriction will apply to both private cars and municipal transport.
On March 21, from 15:00 to 00:00, the movement of transport will be completely restricted in the following direction:
- Liberty Square;
- Shalva Dadiani street (changing direction);
- Rustaveli Avenue – from Freedom Square to Republic Square;
- All streets connecting Rustaveli Avenue;
- Metekhi Bridge, Square of Europe;
- Baratashvili bridge, Baratashvili hill;
- Ketevan Queen’s Avenue – from the hotel “Metekhi” to the metro station “Avlabri” direction;
- Avlip Zurabashvili and Telavi streets;
- Tsurtsumia Street;
- Akhvlediani Square.
During this period, it will be possible to travel by alternative routes:
- From Sololaki, the flow of cars will move through Asatiani street towards Gorgasli street;
- The moving stream on the Upper Vera will be able to move through Barnov Street, in the direction of the Round Garden, as well as from Barnov Street to Melikishvili Avenue through all the surrounding streets.
- Cars will move from Kote Abkhaz street to Shalva Dadiani street (traffic on Freedom Square is completely restricted); they will pass through Lermontov and Machable streets to Leonidze street, from where they will continue to move towards Sololaki.
- Cars moving on Ketevan Queen Avenue will be able to move to the “Sheraton Metekhi Palace” hotel, from where they will continue to drive through Bochormi Street to the “Sokari” central office. In addition, the restrictions on the streets near the Trinity Cathedral remain in force.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Tbilisi City Hall urge citizens to refrain from traveling by car, except for an emergency necessity.
