One lane of the road section on the left bank of the Mtkvari River in Tbilisi, on a section near 13a, Space Beach will be closed from November 5 at midnight. The restrictions are expected to be imposed for three months.
Tbilisi City Hall announced that it posted the official results of the traffic changes on its website. Officials said construction will be conducted on the riverbank. They have not said much, but construction on the riverbank is done most often to reinforce the riverbank and prevent damages.
The road will remain open to traffic, however there will only be one lane through the construction zone. Travellers can expect congestion during rush hour when commuters and students are travelling to and from work and school.
These restrictions will be in place starting at midnight on 5 November until early February 2027, subject to construction completion timeframes and weather conditions.
City Hall has apologized to residents for the inconvenience to motorists during the construction.
Everyone needs to leave a bit earlier than usual, drive more carefully, take roadworks detours and follow any signposting, keep watch for construction workers and give them space while they work, keep an eye on the traffic and follow the instructions of roadworkers. It would be a good idea to check the traffic news before leaving.
This work has been done to safeguard the riverbank as the banks can wear away over time. This natural wear away of the soil can be caused by high volumes of rain, flooding and flowing water. If this was to occur the erosion could damage roads, paths and surrounding properties.
The work near the river also may affect pedestrians using the river and the businesses. Construction equipment and vehicles will be noisy during the day, and some pedestrian walkways in the immediate area could be closed. Drivers and walkers should follow signs and avoid restricted areas.
These alternative roads many drivers take may also bring less traffic to the businesses near the project site. Nonetheless, hopes are that this project will result in a safer, improved bank along the river.
The City Hall appeals to both inhabitants and visitors to cooperate for the three months of work. The construction management will inform on the course of the work and of the potential extension of the traffic ban through all its communication channels.
Before travelling, drivers should plan their route, adhere to traffic signage and allow additional time for the delay.
